Okay my fellow curly-haired ladies. This is the post you’ve been looking for! I’ve spent basically my entire life trying to figure out how to manage my crazy mop of blonde curly hair. Thinking back over the past few years in particular, I just see dollar signs floating down the drain in an endless waterfall of trying products that weigh my curls down, dry them out, or just don’t have any effect. If you have curly hair, you’ve likely had the same experience and are just as “over it” as I am. The good news is, I have finally found products that do wonders for my hair and I can’t wait to share them with you!
Before you take my word for it, let’s talk through a few things. My hair is naturally very curly and relatively thick. It definitely has a tendency to be really frizzy and easily gets weighed down by too much product, especially if it’s overly thick. I have been in search of products that complement my curls and their natural beauty instead of making them something they’re not. If you have naturally tight curls, you can try to find product that will relax them but you’re going to have a difficult time because your hair wants to do what it’s made to do! Similarly, if you have loose curls and you’d like them to be fuller and tighter, these products can help to encourage the curl but that’s not what they’re designed to do.
As I’ve lived my life with curly hair I’ve learned to really love what my curls are and how to embrace them and their natural beauty. These products work wonders on shaping, holding, and smoothing my curls for a beautiful hold all day long.
Curly Hair Products
So since using this list of products, I only wash my hair once every 4-6 days. I used to have to wash it every 2-3 days because I’d have so much product build-up on my scalp that I’d be itching it like crazy (gross, but true). Since finding these products, I no longer have that problem and just end up washing my hair because my curls need to be freshened up after 4-6 days.
Shampoo
Lush Cosmetics Curly Wurly Shampoo
One of my frustrations with shampoo over the years was that it always seemed to dry my hair out! My hair would feel like straw after washing, no matter how much conditioner I used. Since switching to this shampoo, my hair feels hydrated and truly clean. Raw coconut is the primary ingredient, giving your hair a boost of hydration and a lovely light island scent after rinsing. Some say that you don’t even need conditioner with this shampoo but I like to use it anyway, just to really saturate my hair with moisture. If your hair is naturally on the greasier side, you might be fine without conditioner!
Conditioner
Macadamia Oil Deep Repair Mask
So if a warm fuzzy blanket existed for your hair, this this conditioner would be it. Since using this deep repair masque, my hair has become stronger, grown faster, and had a noticeable glow that wasn’t there before. Since I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week, this masque is perfect to use every time. If you wash your hair more than twice a week, I’d recommend using something else on the extra days, as this is designed for more infrequent use. After shampooing, massage a generous amount of the product into your hair, focusing on the ends where your hair tends to get the most dried out. I allow it to sit on my hair for a good ten minutes and then rinse. You’ll love how soft your hair feels and the scent is to die for!
Detangler & Leave-In Conditioner
Its A 10 Miracle Leave-In plus Keratin
I’d been told by several curly-haired friends to try out Its A 10 products and I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to do so! Their entire line is fantastic, but this is my favorite It’s A 10 product. It’s so nice and light, I just spray it on to my damp hair and run my fingers through to make sure it’s evenly distributed. You can blow dry or air dry as you normally would. This product basically serves as a detangler, leave-in-conditioner, and curl smoother all in one. I love how it doesn’t weigh my hair down or make it sticky. It’s nice and light and does it’s job without getting in the way.
Macadamia Professional Activating Curl Cream
Full disclosure, I got a sample of this in a Birchbox kit and was hooked after that. Sometimes my curls have a tendency to get stringy especially if it’s hot and humid during the summer. This curl cream gives my curls life! I use about a quarter-sized amount in my long hair and evenly distribute it, especially focusing from about half-way down to the ends. Give it a good scrunch if you’re trying to encourage your curls. It’ll give it a nice light-weight bounce.
So there you have it my friends! Notice there’s no gels or other products to make your hair hard or crusty? I’m not kidding, these products do everything you want a gel or mousse to do but they eliminate the heavy gunk that we all hate. One of the other great things about these products is they all come in sample sizes so if you’re really skeptical, order a sample size and give those a try before investing in the larger size! That’s what I did and after a couple uses, I went and ordered the full size because I knew my curl care product dreams had finally come true! Make your curls happy!
